Carcassonne is situated in the Aude region in the South of France, steeped in history it has one of the largest fortified castles in Europe, the Unesco World Heritage Carcassonne Cité. From afar it looks like a fairy-tale castle, gleaming in sunlight during the day and beautifully illuminated at night – it could well have been the inspiration for some of the Disney films. Built originally by the Gauls, Romans, Visigoths, Moors and Franks, and then later used as one of the major strongholds for the Cathars. Make sure you don’t miss the stunning July 14 th fireworks which are celebrated each year and attracted thousands of visitors each year.
The Medieval Castle, La Cité.
Thousands of people visit the medieval streets of Carcassonne every year to discover this amazing castle, which was used to film parts of the 1991 Robin Hood film. You will find intricate shops in the city, as well as delicious food such as Cassoulet and tantalising ice creams!
Every July Carcassonne host's a Festival that brings world-renown artists to the city. You'll be mesmerized by captivating performances, awe-inspiring music, and theatrical productions. Enjoy performances by internationally acclaimed musicians, world-class dancers, and renowned theater companies. You can purchase these tickets at the local tourist board, if there aren't any artists that tick your boxes you can walk down to the "old town" and enjoy free festivals by other artists all whilst indulging in a nice glass of crisp white.
